Dorawaka Cave




The cave is formed by two large triangular shaped boulders leaning together more than 55 feet high. Caves that could shelter large numbers of people at once provide archaeological evidence of human habitation during the modern Stone Age in Sri Lanka. A cave with an archeological value dating back to 6300 BC was discovered around 1940. Stone Age pottery, charcoal and stone tools were found in the excavations in this cave. The excavations were carried out in 2 pits more than 18 feet deep. found in Cereal seeds preserved during the transition from the stone age to the farming age have also been found in this expedition. Various pictures and symbols are seen in the numbered places on the rock on the right. There is a popular opinion that there was a Kurutu song there, but now they have disappeared. Among the cave paintings, the elephant logo, the sun moon logo and the fish logo are mentioned. There are different opinions about this painting. .There is one opinion that the kings elephants were kept in this cave. That is why it got the nickname "Athubedi Lena". The other opinion about this is that the elephant was used as a trademark of the Naga tribes who lived in Sri Lanka.
